Child Development 8 years and older
This workshop looks at children who are more physically active, more sophisticated in their emotional responses and crave to be part of a social group. They have made great gains in their cognitive ability, generally being able to understand right and wrong in an intellectual manner; they have an estimated 3,000 word vocabulary and can keep on task for an hour or more. What’s not to love about these children, they are growing up.
Along with the up side there is another side we need to keep an eye on. Children develop at different rates and we need to not only be aware of this, but keep an eye out. Children can suffer if their social skills are not on par, they may find it difficult to express their emotions or do so, in an unacceptable manner. As professional childcare workers, we need to be able to identify and assist this age to learn to be independent and joyful.
